Discussions are in progress, but no official decision has been made yet.
Agarkar was narrowly defeated by Chetan Sharma in late 2020 when both were contenders for the chief selector position.
He assumed the role in mid-2023, starting his responsibilities with the ODI World Cup that year, where the team had an impressive run but ultimately faltered in the final match.
Since then, India has enjoyed significant success in white-ball cricket. This success began with their T20 World Cup victory in 2024 in the Caribbean, followed by wins in the Champions Trophy in 2025 and a successful title defense earlier this month in Ahmedabad.
Conversely, the team has faced struggles in the longest format of the game.
India suffered losses in Australia and at home against New Zealand and South Africa, struggling to navigate the transition after the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Agarkar has been candid in addressing tough questions during his tenure, responding to inquiries about Kohli and Rohit’s departures. He also managed Shubman Gill’s emergence as a leader in ODIs despite Rohit’s ongoing presence.
A decision regarding his future with the current team is anticipated in the upcoming weeks. Alongside Agarkar in the selection committee are Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra, RP Singh, and Pragyan Ojha.
