Here’s What to Know About Memorial Day Travel in Texas for 2025


Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, and with that comes a lot of travel in Texas.  Many families take this time to take their first summer vacation since school is out and everyone needs a fun break.

How Many Texans Are Traveling Over Memorial Weekend?

With Texas being as vast as it is, a lot of people will be hitting the roads and crossing the Lone Star State. With that knowledge, it will be a very busy weekend.  AAA Texas is anticipating that over 3.6 million Texans will take the roads and skies on Memorial Weekend. That’s 4.2% more than traveled in 2024.

Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio have been named the top summer travel destinations in Texas this summer.

What Types of Transportation are Texans Using to Travel On Memorial Weekend?

Driving is the main option for travel for Texans.  Over 3.1 million Texans will be traveling to their vacation destinations by car. While nearly 300,000 Texans are opting to fly to their destination.  This year, 13% more people are opting to fly than in 2024. The rest of the traveling Texans are traveling by bus, train, or boat.

What Do Gas Prices Look Like for Memorial Weekend in 2025?

AAA Texas estimates that gas prices will be 50 cents per gallon cheaper than they were last year.   Gas prices in Texas this time last year were $3.20 a gallon, and as of today, they are averaging at $2.81 per gallon.  Those traveling this year will be paying less at the pump than they did a year ago.

For those traveling by air this year, you will be paying at least 2% more on air travel than last year.  If you are staying in a hotel, expect prices to also be 8% more than you were paying in 2024.

If you are traveling on Memorial Weekend, make sure you plan ahead for your travel and be safe on those Texas Highways. Keep in mind that this is a big weekend, and that means extra patrols on the roads helping to keep people safe.  Make sure all passengers are buckled up in a car seat, or you might be facing a ticket.  As always, if you are operating a vehicle, please don’t drink and drive.
