Three tennis teams punch ticket to state, two teams win region titles

With state tournament play in Murfreesboro just one week away across all sports, several local teams made Thursday their moment to keep the road to a state title open.

When all was said in done in a day that featured four different high school sports, three tennis teams punched their ticket back to state, while both one soccer team and one softball team claimed region titles – setting up for a one game sectional.

Both Science Hill boys and girls tennis teams secured a trip to the ‘Boro with sectional wins at home, while University High boys tennis also reclaimed their spot back in state.

In a tough day on the diamond in sectionals, Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett and Unicoi County each saw their season come to an end – the Blue Devils losing a pair of one-run games to come up short. David Crockett softball also had their season come to an end in a one-run loss at Gibbs in the sectional.

And to cap off region tournament play, Science Hill softball outlasted the defending champs Dobyns-Bennett to take the Region 1-AAAA crown. Meanwhile, David Crockett boys soccer dominated Tennessee High 5-1 in the Region 1-AA final inside the Stone Castle.
