Spain’s Coach De la Fuente Calls Argentina’s Actions at World Cup Final ‘Unacceptable’

Luis de la Fuente, the coach of World Cup-winning Spain, expressed his disgust towards the actions of Argentina’s players following their 1-0 defeat in Sunday’s final, which instigated a brawl between the two teams and led to a FIFA investigation.

As the final whistle blew, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes confronted several Spanish players, including defender Eric Garcia and midfielder Gavi, igniting the clash. The teams needed to be physically separated, with Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni attempting to defuse the situation.

FIFA has designated a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to look into the incident.
“I find this behavior intolerable and unacceptable from such talented players, whom I had previously praised, and who are guided by an outstanding coach,” De la Fuente remarked to Spanish public broadcaster TVE on Thursday.

“I want to emphasize our response to that level of aggression and provocation. Our players maintained their composure and displayed true professionalism.”

Reuters has reached out to the Argentine Football Association for a response to De la Fuente’s remarks.

On Wednesday, Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala extended his apologies for his involvement in the altercation post-match.

De la Fuente, who also guided Spain to the European Championship in 2024, stated that leading the national team in the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Spain, will be “the greatest source of pride for any coach.”
