Census 2027: Tamil Nadu Residents Can Now Submit Their Census Information on This Portal
For the first time since India’s Independence, residents of Tamil Nadu can submit their Census 2027 details online without having to wait for an officer to visit their homes. The Self Enumeration Portal (SEP) launches today, July 17, providing residents with a more convenient and quicker way to share their information.

The online service will be accessible until July 31, after which the traditional house-to-house survey will commence on August 1 and run for 30 days. Sundaresh Babu, IAS, Director of Census Operations in Tamil Nadu, has urged everyone to engage in this vital national exercise by entering their information on the official website,

According to the official press release, “Upon successful completion of the self-enumeration process, a unique identification number will be generated. Citizens must present this ID to the enumerators when they visit their homes. Households that do not choose self-enumeration will be included during the regular physical enumeration phase set from August 1 to August 30, 2026.”

Sundaresh Babu revealed that robust security measures have been established to safeguard individuals’ personal information. He stated that a three-layer security system is utilized on mobile devices and servers to protect the data submitted by Tamil Nadu residents. He advised everyone to use only the official Self Enumeration Portal for entering their census details and to avoid unofficial websites or links, minimizing the risk of scams.

The Director of Census Operations explained to The New Indian Express that residents must first access the official Self-enumeration portal or Union Territory and complete the captcha verification. Next, they need to provide the name of the head of the household, mobile number, and email address.

An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number and email for verification. Once verified, residents can select their preferred language and fill in their census information.

After submitting the form, they will receive an 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID), which should be presented to the census official during the house visit. If the ID is unavailable, the official will gather the census details again. In case someone forgets the SE ID, it can be retrieved using their registered mobile number.

The 16th National Census is being conducted across India from April 1 to September 30.
