Election Commission Announces July 24 Bypolls for Three West Bengal Rajya Sabha Seats

Election Commission Announces July 24 Bypolls for Three West Bengal Rajya Sabha Seats
By-elections for three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal, which became vacant after the resignations of rebel Trinamool Congress MPs, will take place on July 24, as announced by the Election Commission on Monday, July 6.

The three TMC Rajya Sabha members who resigned are Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Baraik. They left their positions on various dates in June after raising concerns about the party leadership in light of its defeat in the assembly elections.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stepped down on June 8, 2026, while Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik followed suit on June 10 and June 11, respectively.
The terms of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Prakash Chik Baraik were set to conclude on August 18, 2029, whereas Sushmita Dev’s term was due to end on April 2, 2030.

The Election Commission indicated that separate by-elections will be conducted for each of the three vacant positions.

Election schedule

The announcement for the bypolls will be made on July 7, with the final date for filing nominations being July 14. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on July 15, and candidates will have until July 17 to withdraw their nominations.

Voting is scheduled for July 24, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with vote counting to occur at 5:00 pm on the same day.

The entire election process is expected to conclude by July 27, as per the Commission.

With the BJP securing a majority in the West Bengal assembly elections, their representation in the Rajya Sabha is anticipated to increase following these three bypolls.
