Curaçao Celebrates Its Historic World Cup Debut Against Germany
Curaçao is gearing up for its historic World Cup debut against Germany, a four-time champion, filled with excitement and pride.

On Sunday, this island nation, home to 150,000 residents, will make history as the smallest country to participate in the World Cup.

Coach Dick Advocaat has been working diligently to keep his players focused and at ease as they approach this remarkable opportunity.
“Just be yourself, and don’t get nervous,” defender Shurandy Sambo recounted, sharing Advocaat’s message just before the team departed from their training camp in Florida to Houston. “Everyone is excited, but remember to be yourself and showcase your abilities; this is the grandest stage.”

The Curaçao team has diligently prepared for this momentous occasion. Germany, making its 21st World Cup appearance, is the clear favorite.

“We’ve analyzed numerous clips of Germany. We’ve studied their gameplay and strategies,” Sambo noted.

Curaçao’s players represent a country that seldom experiences such significant moments on the international sports scene.

Because of its strong Dutch connections, Curaçao is not recognized as an independent nation in the Olympics, and despite producing many professional baseball athletes, players from Curaçao compete for the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic.

“We’re not here to merely participate,” said midfielder Ar’jany Martha. “We aim to showcase our talents and achieve positive results.”

Even with its small population, Curaçao will have a substantial fan base supporting them as they make history. Sambo mentioned that his family would be present, along with 21 families of other team members.

“I would say we are like one big family,” defender Livano Comenencia remarked. “Whether on the bus or at the hotel, we’re always together, filled with music and happiness. Everyone is close.”
