President approves the resignation of Union Minister George Kurian.
Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian has stepped down from the council of ministers following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha term.

President Droupadi Murmu approved his resignation based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recommendation from the Union Council of Ministers, as stated in an official announcement from Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, June 23.

“The President of India, upon the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri George Kurian from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect,” the statement confirmed. This acceptance was made in accordance with clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution, which describes the president’s powers regarding the appointment and removal of union ministers.
Kurian’s resignation followed the completion of his six-year term in the Rajya Sabha, necessitating his departure from the ministerial role.

He also served as the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, making him the sole minister in the Union government representing the Christian community.

As a long-standing member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 1980, Kurian was brought into the third Modi government as part of the party’s efforts to engage with minority communities across the nation.

His tenure in the Rajya Sabha concluded on June 21. Alongside Kurian, two other Union ministers, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, were not renominated for the Rajya Sabha elections held on June 18, as their terms were also set to expire.
