Vijay’s Initial Month as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister: Introduction of Free Electricity, Anti-Drug Initiative, and Women’s Safety Task Force

A month has passed since actor-turned-politician Vijay assumed the role of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, and his administration has already implemented several policy initiatives.

One of the first significant actions taken was to raise the free electricity benefit for eligible households to 200 units.

Previously, families were entitled to 100 units of free electricity each month. Now, they can access 200 units monthly, equating to up to 400 free units in a two-month billing cycle.
This benefit applies provided the household’s total electricity consumption in two months does not exceed 500 units.

The government has also initiated a statewide anti-drug campaign and formed specialized task forces to combat the proliferation of narcotics. The primary aim is to create a ‘drug-free Tamil Nadu’.

Officials indicate that the issues include synthetic drugs, misuse of pharmaceutical medications, and a rising trend of drug addiction among youth, particularly within schools and colleges. Educational institutions are regarded as significantly susceptible.

The government helmed by Vijay has also introduced a dedicated women’s safety unit called ‘Singapen Sirappu Athiradi Padai’, which will serve as an elite all-women police force. Their objective is to enhance safety for women and quickly address crimes or emergencies affecting them throughout the state.

In the first 13 days, the administration launched numerous welfare programs. They issued a ₹1,000 installment for the women’s scheme for May and announced a 2% Dearness Allowance (DA) increase for about 16 lakh government employees.

Furthermore, the Vijay-led administration introduced 40 new government vehicles, released 9 new textbooks for Classes 1 to 3, and established a 35-member full cabinet to oversee various state departments.

Vijay convened his first cabinet meeting on June 7, which lasted over an hour, to outline the government’s initial action agenda. During this meeting, he unveiled a substantial list of 436 new projects across different government departments for the upcoming months.
