Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan reported that two of the injured were in critical condition. He noted that it appeared at least two individuals were exchanging gunfire with each other.
The Toledo Police Department indicated that the incident occurred near the Old West End Festival, an annual event featuring live music and home tours in a historic area of the city.
An active search for the individuals involved is currently underway, according to the department.
“I am extremely concerned about the situation in Toledo tonight. Summer festivals should provide safe environments for families to enjoy without the fear of violence,” stated Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Various videos shared on social media displayed individuals fleeing amidst gunfire while emergency personnel attended to those who seemed injured.
Kevin Berry mentioned that he was at the neighborhood arboretum enjoying live music with friends when he suddenly heard several gunshots.
“Everyone hit the ground,” he reported.
When he glanced up, he noticed a firearm being discarded just under 50 feet from him. Police officers who were already present for the festival quickly reacted to the situation.
With his medical training from his service in the US Navy, Berry circulated the area, searching for anyone who might require assistance.
He recounted seeing at least five people with gunshot wounds.
“The individuals who were injured were scattered around the arboretum area,” he elaborated.
The Old West End Festival spans two days in Toledo’s historic district, featuring live music, food vendors, home tours, and shopping.
Berry referred to it as the “kick-off to Toledo’s summer festival season.”
