Gambhir Emphasizes Support for ICC's Pink Ball Rule to Maintain Game Momentum
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed his approval of the ICC’s recent decision to permit the use of pink balls in day-night Test matches under suboptimal light conditions, emphasizing that this change could enable teams to pursue results in games affected by weather.

The ICC has recently sanctioned a trial allowing teams to transition from the traditional red ball to a pink ball during regular Test matches, as long as both teams consent beforehand. This initiative aims to maximize playing time when bad light threatens to interrupt the game.

“I believe this is fantastic. My stance is that whenever there’s a chance to achieve a result, one should take it,” Gambhir commented on the eve of the one-off Test against Afghanistan.
According to the proposed approach, Test matches will commence with the regular red ball. However, if visibility diminishes and floodlights become necessary, the pink ball can be introduced to maintain play and avoid the loss of crucial overs.

“Consider playing the final Test before the World Test Championship final, with the opportunity to win and qualify. If bad light prevents that, it’s frustrating. I support this change if it provides a chance for a result and both teams agree,” Gambhir remarked.

He also pointed out that this rule amendment could be especially advantageous in matches affected by weather, where interruptions reduce the chances of a decisive outcome. The pink ball has mainly been utilized in day-night Test matches since its introduction, but this new ICC initiative represents the first attempt to use it as a backup during regular daytime Tests.

“I understand it may present some uncertainty or challenges for players in a Test match, but think about dedicating two years to preparation for the last Test before the World Test Championship final,” he continued.

“If conditions worsen and five days aren’t played due to bad luck, the uncertainty is immense. Therefore, I consider this a proactive and positive move, and I hope teams will embrace it positively,” Gambhir added.
