Amit Shah in Kolkata for Discussions on BJP Chief Minister Candidate Amid West Bengal Government Formation
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to establish its inaugural government in West Bengal following a resounding victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, claiming 206 seats in the 294-member legislature, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was diminished to 81. This verdict concludes TMC’s 15-year governance and marks a significant political transformation in the state.

Focus has shifted to the BJP’s choice for chief minister, with the oath-taking ceremony planned for May 9, as stated by BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya.

The decision is expected to be made after discussions involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders, along with guidance from central observers and state units. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been appointed as the central co-observer.
Important verdict and leadership considerations

The West Bengal election witnessed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee losing the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that the state has “experienced a transformation” and that the “lotus has blossomed from Gangotri to Gangasagar,” while addressing party volunteers in New Delhi.

Suvendu Adhikari is a key player in the leadership discussions. He secured Nandigram and triumphed over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.

Adhikari began his political journey with the Congress, becoming a councillor in Kanthi municipality in 1995. He joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1998 and was elected from Contai South in 2006. He was instrumental in the 2007 Nandigram land protest against a proposed chemical hub, which helped TMC ascend to power.

He subsequently entered Parliament from Tamluk in 2009 and retained the seat in 2014. Returning to state politics in 2016, he won from Nandigram on a TMC ticket and joined the state cabinet before transferring to the BJP in December 2020. After defeating Banerjee in the 2021 elections, he became Leader of the Opposition.

Dilip Ghosh

Dilip Ghosh, a former state BJP president and RSS affiliate, won the Kharagpur Sadar seat.

Ghosh was previously elected from the same constituency in 2016 and led the party’s campaign in the 2019 general elections, during which the BJP acquired a 40.7% vote share in the state.

As an MLA and party spokesperson, she has been actively engaging with the public, especially on women’s issues, and is part of the party’s emerging leadership cadre.

Samik Bhattacharya

Samik Bhattacharya, the current state BJP president, is also under consideration. Recognized for his organizational skills, he has focused on booth-level management, electoral strategies, and mobilizing party workers, reflecting the party’s long-term framework in West Bengal.

Rupa Ganguly

Rupa Ganguly, a former Rajya Sabha MP and actress, won in the Sonarpur Dakshin constituency by defeating TMC’s Arundhuti Maitra.
