During a review of the law and order situation with senior officials, particularly in light of the sexual assault and brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore, Vijay emphasized that individuals involved in such heinous acts must face strict consequences and that severe punishments should be meted out to suspects.
This meeting also came in response to opposition critiques regarding the law and order conditions under the TVK government. Various political entities, including the main opposition DMK, have criticized the TVK administration for a series of murders and sexual crimes.
At the review meeting, the CM directed the Advocate General to expedite trials while ensuring precautionary measures and increased awareness concerning crimes against women and children.
”Sexual assault cases need to be tried swiftly, and those found guilty deserve severe punishment to deter future offenses,” Vijay instructed officials, according to a state government release.
On Sunday, the Chief Minister communicated with the family of the girl who was reportedly assaulted and murdered in Coimbatore, assuring them that justice would be served.
The tragic case of the child’s brutal murder in Sulur has sparked widespread shock and outrage across Tamil Nadu, prompting Chief Minister Vijay to promise rigorous action following the uproar from the opposition.
Two individuals, including an acquaintance of the victim, have been apprehended in relation to the incident.
The meeting, which took place at the state Secretariat, included Chief Secretary M Saikumar, Home Secretary K Manivasan, Advocate General Vijay Narayan, Secretary of the Social Welfare and Women’s Rights Department Mariam Pallavi Baldev, Director General of Police Sandeep Roy Rathore, and other senior officials.
Earlier in the day, a 17-year-old boy was murdered in the parking lot of the renowned Sri Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai, allegedly by a group of five men, prompting political backlash as many questioned the management of law and order in the state.
Leader of the Opposition DMK in the Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin reported that in the last 15 days, Tamil Nadu has seen 25 murders, 4 double homicides, and 19 sexual assault cases.
”These events illustrate how law and order has deteriorated under those who promised change when they took power,” Udhayanidhi remarked sarcastically on ’X’.
He pointed out that even before the shock of the ”atrocious” crime against a minor girl in Sulur had subsided, another sexual assault against a minor girl was reported in Villupuram, a teenager was murdered in Madurai, and a petrol bomb was thrown at a woman’s home in Coimbatore. ”Respected Chief Minister Sir, is this Tamil Nadu or Uttar Pradesh? Where has your Singapen Special Task Force for women’s safety gone?” Udhayanidhi questioned in a post on ’X’.
The Chief Minister’s meeting with police officials was described as an ”eyewash” by him, emphasizing that routine statements are insufficient. The government must recognize the gravity of the situation. The chief minister should outline the proactive measures he plans to implement to prevent crimes against women and children, the DMK youth wing secretary stated.
Opposition AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami expressed his shock over the murder, stating on ’X’ that the Chief Minister had promised good governance and change. ”Yet, we are losing lives daily. This administration is a disappointment. Reports suggest members of the ruling party were involved in the Madurai murder case,” he claimed.
Palaiswami asserted that, like the previous DMK government, the current Chief Minister has not adequately addressed various incidents occurring in Tamil Nadu since assuming office, urging that if Vijay truly cared for the state’s citizens who elected him, he would take immediate steps to rectify the law and order situation.
In a video posted on ’X’, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai remarked, ”What you see in this video are the blood stains of a young boy who was brutally killed by a gang of five near the Meenakshi Amman temple in Madurai.” He noted that in Tamil Nadu, drug dealers, sexual offenders, and murderers face no repercussions. ”The state police appear to have learned nothing from the past, and the new TVK government is yet to confront the stark realities they face,” Annamalai stated.
Meanwhile, the Vilakkuthoon police in Madurai arrested five suspects within hours of the crime, including two juveniles, according to police reports.
Further investigations are underway.
