In a discussion with CNBC-TV18, Kumar mentioned his desire to “pick his brain” and gain insights from Modi’s extensive political career.
Kumar was recently inaugurated as the mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, having previously held the position of deputy mayor. His election has garnered attention in both the UK and India due to his age and Indian heritage.
Reflecting on his achievement as the youngest mayor at 23, Kumar noted that the experience initially felt surreal.
“The first thought that crossed my mind was, am I dreaming? It felt incredibly surreal,” he shared. “It didn’t feel real that I’ve become the youngest mayor at this age.”
Kumar pointed out that while many of his peers are still contemplating their future paths, he opted to delve into politics and public service early on. He first entered local politics at the age of 20, inspired by his engagement in community initiatives.
Despite his swift advancement in politics, Kumar emphasized his commitment to serving the community over pursuing higher office.
“I want to give it my all. I want to ensure that I’m accessible to the people who elected me,” he stated, adding that he would consider larger political roles only if they enable him to assist more individuals.
Kumar also underscored that politics shouldn’t be regarded purely as a monetary career. “I’m not in this for the pay or salary,” he remarked. “I see it as a passion. I enjoy helping people and contributing to the community.”

The young mayor, a graduate of King’s College London, plans to pursue a master’s degree in Political Economy at University College London later this year. He mentioned that he has adapted to juggling academics with politics since being elected as a councillor while still in university.
Originally hailing from Haryana, Kumar credited his upbringing and Indian heritage for shaping his values and political perspective.
“I’ll give credit to my parents, honestly,” he remarked. “Always stay connected to your roots.”
