The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 kicks off today, with the Election Commission of India set to unveil official trends starting at 8 am. Notably, postal ballots will be counted at the end this time, according to News18.
This election has emerged as one of the most intense contests in recent history, posing a challenge to the stronghold that All India Trinamool Congress’ Mamata Banerjee has maintained in the state over the last fifteen years, as exit polls indicate a close race leaning slightly towards the BJP.
According to News18 exit polls, the BJP is projected to secure approximately 143-163 seats, while TMC might achieve between 127-147, hovering just around the majority threshold of 148.
Bhabanipur emerges as a crucial battleground for Banerjee as she faces off against BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. Additionally, other key contests in Nandigram, Asansol Dakshin, and Baharampur are anticipated to significantly influence the outcomes.
It’s worth noting that West Bengal recorded a remarkable voter turnout of over 92%, determining the government’s fate for the next five years. However, this doesn’t necessarily imply a higher number of individuals cast their votes, particularly after the revision of the voter list.
The ECI’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls has led to allegations that millions of eligible voters have been removed from the lists, especially affecting the Muslim minority community in the state, according to opposition parties.
West Bengal remains one of the few states where the BJP has yet to secure a victory.
Vote counting is also ongoing for assembly elections in three other states and one Union Territory – Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry – on Monday, May 4.
Stay tuned for the latest updates.
