The regulations arise from the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act enacted in October 2025. Alongside this announcement, the government is anticipated to operationalize the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI), tasked with ensuring compliance and enforcement in the industry.
In the proposed framework, online games will be divided into three categories. E-sports and online social games are set to enjoy policy support and promotion, whereas real-money gaming is projected to face a total ban.
Firms offering games without monetary stakes won’t need to register under the new guidelines, reducing compliance burdens for many casual gaming platforms.
The law also suggests strict penalties for violations. Hosting or facilitating real-money gaming could lead to up to three years of imprisonment and a fine reaching ₹1 crore.
