Currently, trains such as the Udyan Express take over 18 hours, whereas the Coimbatore Express can take close to 19 hours and 20 minutes. This new service aims to reduce that duration while enhancing comfort.
Route and launch timeline
The upcoming sleeper train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to KSR Bengaluru Railway Station received official approval on April 5, 2026. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this news in a letter to MP PC Mohan. This will mark the second Vande Bharat Sleeper train in India, following the inaugural launch on the Howrah-Kamakhya route on January 17, 2026.
The train will commence its journey from Mumbai, passing through Pune, Solapur, and Wadi before reaching Bengaluru. Notably, some sections of the route, specifically Daund-Wadi and Wadi-Guntakal, have already been upgraded to accommodate speeds of up to 130 kmph.
Alternative routes via Kalaburagi or Hubballi are also being explored. The service is expected to launch by December 2026, although an exact date is still pending announcement.
Schedule, fare and booking details
The train is anticipated to operate six days a week, reserving one day for maintenance. Departures are expected around 9 pm from both sides, ensuring a smooth overnight travel experience. Two train sets will be utilized to maintain regular service in both directions.
Fare estimates are expected to be around ₹ 2,500 for AC 3-tier, ₹ 3,000 to ₹ 3,200 for AC 2-tier, and ₹ 3,600 to ₹ 3,900 for First AC. There will be no dynamic pricing, and meals will be included in the fare. Ticketing will adhere to a strict policy allowing only fully confirmed tickets, with no RAC or waitlist options.
Features and capacity
The train will feature 16 coaches and accommodate a total of 823 passengers. This includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches, and 1 First AC coach. Passengers can look forward to modern amenities such as orthopaedic berths, reading lights, charging points, and soft night lighting. The First AC class will offer additional facilities like showers and baby care areas.
The standout aspects of this train will be its safety and comfort. It will feature CCTV surveillance and the ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system. Although it has been tested at speeds up to 180 kmph, operational speeds will generally be around 130 kmph. Once the train number and schedule are publicly released, tickets will be available on the IRCTC website and app, with bookings opening up to 120 days in advance.
