CUNY fashion program prepares students for the industry

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — CUNY’s The New York City College of Technology (City Tech) started an undergraduate area of study called Business & Technology of Fashion seven years ago for students who desire careers in the fashion industry. The program provides a clear path into many employment opportunities, by coupling essential business skills with a sequence of required and elective liberal arts courses. The core curriculum provides insight into the sociological and psychological factors influencing fashion interest and demand in today’s global market.

The undergraduate program emphasizes hands-on learning through lab work. Classes and areas of specialization include fashion history, sewing, dyeing, visual merchandising, product development and luxury fashion.

“A lot of students here want to get into the fashion industry, but they don’t necessarily have all of the skills needed to become designers. There are so many areas that they can work in. This program is helping them figure out where exactly they fit in the fashion industry,” said Kelly Valladares, who teaches Product Development and Introduction to the Fashion Industry.
