Shami Offers Candid Insight on the Lack of Skill and Experience Affecting IPL 2026 Performance
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami credited his success in domestic cricket for keeping him sharp and fit during the current IPL season, as he delivered impressive figures of 4-0-9-2 for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the latter’s home on Monday.

“To perform, staying connected to the game is crucial. Only when you’re fit can you focus on honing your skills. That’s why I ensured I played all the domestic matches,” he stated.

Shami bowled 18 dot balls in his four-over spell, utilizing slower deliveries and yorkers to disrupt the rhythm of Ishan Kishan and Travis Head at the start.
“I’m pleased. We lost our last match, so winning this one was essential to gain momentum,” he mentioned.

He elaborated that being in peak physical condition enables a player to refine their skills, which is why he prioritized participating in domestic games to maintain his rhythm.

The experienced pacer also emphasized that both skill and experience are vital at the highest level.

“Without skill or experience, nothing comes together,” he commented.

Shami further stressed the need to adjust to different conditions, noting that he intentionally integrated slower deliveries into his strategy after seeing their effectiveness.

Reflecting on past performances at this venue with SRH, he said he opted to lean more on variations, particularly slower balls, having noted their success in previous matches and used by opposing bowlers.

“Adaptation is essential. I played here last year and relied heavily on slower balls. Since opponents use them effectively, I thought, why not implement them as well?” he explained.
