West Bengal Assembly Elections: Historic 93.19% Voter Participation in Initial Phase, Reports Election Commission
The initial phase of the West Bengal assembly elections saw a remarkable voter turnout of 93.19%, the highest in the state’s history, according to the Election Commission.

Polls for this phase took place on April 23 in 152 assembly segments spanning 16 districts, with 3.36 crore of the total 3.61 crore voters casting their votes, as reported on Saturday.

Among those who participated, 1.65 crore were women, while 1.71 crore were men, it stated.
Cooch Behar district achieved the highest turnout rate at 96.2%, followed closely by Dakshin Dinajpur at 95.44% and Malda at 94.79%.
Jalpaiguri noted a turnout of 94.76%, Birbhum at 94.51%, and Uttar Dinajpur at 94.16%.

Murshidabad saw a turnout of 93.67%, Alipurduar at 93.2%, Purba Medinipur at 92.75%, Bankura at 92.55%, Jhargram at 92.26%, Paschim Medinipur at 92.19%, Purulia at 91.59%, and Paschim Bardhaman at 90.32%.

Darjeeling recorded a polling rate of 88.98%, while Kalimpong had the lowest turnout at 83.04%.

As per the data released by the EC, the previous record for the highest turnout was 84.72% during the 2011 assembly elections, which saw the TMC come to power, ending the CPI(M)-led Left Front’s 34-year dominance.

The second phase of polling is scheduled for April 29, covering 142 seats across seven districts.

This election follows the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR), during which over 90 lakh names were removed from the electoral rolls, thereby reducing the denominator.
