Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh’s reappointment to Tata Trust meets resistance.

SP Group advocates for Tata Sons' listing ahead of RBI's decision.
The reappointment of Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh as trustees of the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT) has encountered challenges, with two trustees opposing the proposal, according to a report by Moneycontrol on Tuesday, May 5.

According to the report, trustees Mehli Mistry and J N Mistry voted against the proposal to extend the tenure of Srinivasan and Singh, whose current terms are set to expire next week. They had requested renewal, leading to a resolution being circulated for approval among trustees.

Under the governing rules of TEDT, such extensions necessitate unanimous agreement. With two dissenting votes, the reappointments are unlikely to be approved. The report noted that Srinivasan and Singh had supported each other’s continuance as trustees.

TEDT, part of the larger Tata Trusts framework, manages a fund exceeding ₹5,000 crore and prioritizes education-focused initiatives, including scholarships. Its board of trustees features Noel Tata, Srinivasan, Singh, Mehli Mistry, and J N Mistry, among others. Noel Tata, also a life trustee, has not yet voted, as stated in the report.

This development occurs amidst ongoing disagreements within Tata Trusts, the primary holding structure of Tata Sons.

Separately, sources informed CNBC-TV18 that a Tata Trusts meeting set for May 8 will address two significant agenda items, including nominations for the Tata Sons board. Tata Group veteran Bhaskar Bhat is expected to be considered for a board position, according to the sources.

The meeting is also anticipated to discuss recent comments made by Srinivasan and Singh advocating for the listing of Tata Sons, the sources added.

Moneycontrol further reported that there has been uncertainty surrounding the reappointment process, with no clear indication of whether all trustees would back the proposal.

Emails sent to Tata Trusts did not elicit a response by the time of publication.
