The former state minister, recognized as an MGR loyalist, arrived at the TVK headquarters in Panaiyur, joining the party with numerous supporters, including former AIADMK MP V Sathyabama.
Sengottaiyan, typically not seen wearing a shawl, was draped in a yellow-red TVK shawl by Vijay, who praised “Anna” (elder brother) for his 50 years of political experience.
The former minister had joined AIADMK when its founder, the charismatic movie star M G Ramachandran (MGR), established the party in 1972 after breaking away from the DMK due to disputes with its leader, M Karunanidhi.
TVK members are optimistic that Sengottaiyan’s involvement will enhance the party’s influence in the Kongu region, particularly in the eight assembly constituencies within Erode district, his home ground.
The western part of the state, which encompasses Coimbatore and Erode, is referred to as ‘kongu.’ The nine-time legislator resigned from the Gobichettipalayam MLA post on November 26. He is the second AIADMK MLA to resign following O Panneerselvam supporter PH Manoj Pandian, who joined the ruling DMK.
Sengottaiyan was expelled from AIADMK by general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on October 31 after he engaged with dismissed leaders Panneerselvam, T T V Dhinakaran, and V K Sasikala in Ramanathapuram, advocating for their return to the party. Earlier this month, 14 of Sengottaiyan’s supporters, including Sathyabama, were also ousted from AIADMK.
Personally welcoming him, Vijay emphasized that Sengottaiyan’s extensive political experience and dedication would be invaluable for TVK.
“Annan’s 50 years of political experience and dedicated service on the political stage will greatly benefit TVK,” Vijay mentioned in a video message.
“He undertook the significant role of an MLA at the young age of 20. He was a pillar of trust for the two iconic leaders of AIADMK: MGR and J Jayalalithaa,” Vijay highlighted, referencing Sengottaiyan’s initial victory in the Sathyamangalam assembly constituency in 1977.
In response to this shift, BJP state chief Nainar Nagendran asserted that the BJP-AIADMK alliance would remain unaffected by Sengottaiyan’s decision to join TVK.
“Our alliance will stand firm. Regardless of new alliances forming, ours will secure the government,” he stated to reporters in Tirunelveli following the developments.
