A total of 649 candidates are contesting in the Thane civic elections on January 15, following the conclusion of the nomination withdrawal period at 3pm on Friday, an official stated.

During the two-day withdrawal phase, 269 candidates chose to retract their nominations, he noted.

In the Wagle ward, there are 36 candidates left after a record 50 withdrawals, according to the official.
Kalwa saw 21 nominations labeled invalid, marking the highest number of rejections in any single committee area, he added.

Majiwada-Manpada has 92 candidates registered, followed by 83 in Lokmanya-Savarkarnagar and 82 in Kalwa.
