“I believe he (Gill) needs time. He has to be supported.
I sense there will be numerous suggestions about what he should and shouldn’t do. All kinds of opinions will surface. However, his focus should be on the team’s plan. What was discussed in the dressing room? Is it in line with that?” Tendulkar remarked.
He continued, “He should question if all decisions being made are in the team’s best interest, not be swayed by outside influences that claim he is either too aggressive or too defensive. Those are merely opinions, and people will voice them.
“Ultimately, what transpires in the dressing room and what he undertakes for the team’s benefit is what will truly matter. That should be the focus, nothing more,” stated the man who has an unparalleled record of 51 Test hundreds from 200 matches.
Gill, 25, has participated in 32 Test matches for India, a format where he has yet to flourish. He averages 35.05 in the longest format, with six centuries and seven scores above fifty. He scored 147 runs off 227 balls in his first innings as captain, hitting 19 fours and a single six, thereby alleviating some pressure on himself and starting positively on a challenging tour that could significantly shape the future of the Indian setup.
