The Hyderabad-based coach became part of the Indian team in November 2021 during Rahul Dravid’s time as head coach, a period that also saw Rohit assume the role of India’s captain across all formats.
“You are a legend, Dilip guru. You created magic within the group and [you are] a behind-the-scenes workhorse. Best wishes ahead,” Rohit expressed on his Instagram story.
Dilip’s initial stint concluded after the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but he received a one-year contract extension before India’s 2025 Test tour of England.
Throughout his time, India clinched the 2025 ODI Champions Trophy and secured consecutive T20 World Cup titles in 2024 and 2026. The team also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, with Dilip earning widespread acclaim for introducing the unique ‘Best Fielder’ medal ceremony during India’s campaign.
Looking back on his experience, Dilip shared on social media, “Five years. It’s challenging to find the right words for a journey that has meant so much. When I first entered this setup, I came in with one simple intention – to give everything I had every single day.”
“Fielding has always been my way of contributing to the game I love, and I’m thankful for the chance to have been part of this team’s journey,” Dilip added. His tenure wrapped up during India’s white-ball tour of England. He has been succeeded by former Assam cricketer Subhadeep Ghosh, who has previously been involved with the Indian women’s team, India A, and IPL franchises Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 58-year-old Ghosh will join Gautam Gambhir’s support staff and commence his role with India’s two-match Test tour of Sri Lanka starting August 15.
