There had been much speculation about Sooryavanshi’s debut after his outstanding performances with India A and a stellar IPL season, but the team management decided to stick with an experienced top order featuring Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan for the initial match of the series.
“Unfortunately, no. He will get his chance when the time is right. For now, we are opting for three genuine seamers and one all-rounder,” Iyer remarked at the toss.
Had he played, Sooryavanshi would have become India’s youngest-ever men’s international cricketer, breaking the long-held record of Sachin Tendulkar.
The left-handed opener received his first senior call-up after an impressive rise through the ranks, noted by a record-setting IPL season and a dazzling 94 off 29 balls for India A in the final of the tri-series in Sri Lanka.
Instead, India chose to stick with the seasoned top order, with Iyer voicing confidence in players who have consistently performed in recent matches.
While the wait for Sooryavanshi’s international debut continues, Iyer’s remarks indicated that it is merely a matter of time before one of India’s most promising young talents gets his chance on the senior stage.
India is set to tour England for five T20Is starting from July 1, 2026, and Sooryavanshi is included in that squad as well. Currently, Ireland leads the two-match series 1-0, having achieved their first-ever win in international cricket against the Men in Blue.
