Pakistan Train Explosion: 24 Fatalities and Many Injured in Likely Suicide Attack in Balochistan
A devastating bomb explosion targeted a shuttle train carrying Pakistani security personnel and their families in Balochistan on Sunday (May 24), resulting in at least 24 fatalities and over 70 injuries, as reported by government and security officials through Reuters.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred near Quetta, the provincial capital—a region that has faced ongoing militant violence. The BLA asserted in a statement that the incident was a suicide bombing, though Reuters noted they could not independently verify this assertion.

Train derailed, nearby buildings damaged
According to statements from Pakistan’s railways ministry, the shuttle train was en route from Quetta’s cantonment area to connect with the Jaffar Express when the explosion struck close to a railway track. The blast derailed the engine and three coaches, while two more coaches ended up overturned.

A security official reported that an explosives-laden vehicle struck one of the train’s bogies in a residential area. Some victims were residents of nearby buildings affected by the explosion.

Images from the scene depicted considerable destruction, including charred vehicles, twisted metal, damaged homes, and a thick cloud of smoke rising from the debris.

Emergency response and casualties

Local authorities reported that rescue operations commenced immediately, with security forces isolating the area. Hospitals in Quetta treated numerous injured individuals, with some in critical condition, according to medical personnel cited by the Associated Press (AP). Doctors indicated they received over 30 wounded patients shortly after the incident.

Shahid Rind, the spokesperson for the Balochistan provincial government, condemned the attack, stating, “We strongly condemn the targeting of innocent civilians and are deeply saddened by the loss of precious human lives. Terrorist elements deserve no leniency,” as reported by AP. A medical emergency was declared in hospitals throughout Quetta, and an investigation has been initiated.

Militant violence in Balochistan

This attack is the latest in a series of significant incidents in Balochistan, a resource-rich province that has been plagued by insurgency and shares borders with Iran and Afghanistan. Various separatist groups, including the BLA, have long sought increased autonomy or independence and have frequently targeted security forces, infrastructure, and state facilities.

In one of the most severe recent events, BLA militants took control of the Jaffar Express in March 2025, holding hundreds of passengers hostage until a military operation concluded the standoff. Pakistani officials reported that numerous individuals died during the operation, including hostages, soldiers, and assailants.

Earlier this year, Pakistani security forces executed extensive counterinsurgency operations in the wake of coordinated assaults across the province that resulted in nearly 50 fatalities, according to provincial officials.

Government response

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif labeled the bombing a “heinous bomb explosion” in a statement on social media platform X, extending condolences to the victims’ families and affirming the nation’s solidarity with the people of Balochistan, according to Reuters.

Authorities have yet to confirm the complete details of the attack or the final casualty figures, as rescue and identification efforts are still underway.
