In a statement to passengers, airport authorities mentioned: “On 07 May 2026, CSMIA Mumbai will experience a scheduled closure of both runways for six hours, from 11:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs, to perform intensive pre-monsoon maintenance. As a result, multiple flights to and from Mumbai are cancelled. We kindly ask you to check the flight schedule in advance before planning any cargo movements to avoid inconvenience.”
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) organized this closure in coordination with airlines and aviation authorities six months ahead, and most airlines have already adjusted their schedules. Nevertheless, many passengers on both domestic and international routes will encounter cancellations, delays, and rerouting.
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will close both runways — 09/27 and 14/32 — from 11 AM to 5 PM on Thursday for major pre-monsoon maintenance.
This will be one of the most significant planned disruptions at Mumbai’s only major airport.

Why is the closure taking place?
The annual pre-monsoon maintenance is crucial for keeping CSMIA’s 1,033-acre airside in optimal condition. A specialized team assesses runway surfaces for wear and tear. Mumbai’s monsoon season is notoriously severe, characterized by persistent rain, waterlogging, and high humidity. This quality check is vital to ensure the runways are in excellent shape before the season starts.

Contact your airline immediately for rebooking or refunds. Flights outside the 11 am to 5 pm timeframe are likely unaffected, but it’s advisable to allow extra time. Closing down for six hours at an airport with over 1,000 daily flights can lead to delays throughout the evening.
