Indian Influencer's South Korea Getaway Becomes a Nightmare: Essential Tips You Need Before Traveling
Indian content creator Sachin Awasthi has shared a troubling account of his experience with immigration authorities in South Korea. In an Instagram post, Awasthi detailed the stressful incident, revealing that he and his wife were held for 38 hours during their trip to Jeju Island, as well as later in China, without proper explanation.

Upon their arrival at Jeju Island, the couple was unexpectedly denied entry and taken to a holding area. “Hours passed without any clarity. They kept us in their detention centre,” he wrote. Awasthi depicted the detention centre as lacking sunlight, offering minimal access to the outside world, and serving only ‘jail food’.

He alleged that the authorities pressured them into booking an exorbitant return flight to India. The difficulty continued during their transit through China, where they encountered strict oversight, limited communication, and monitored restroom visits conducted by officials equipped with body cameras. “Immigration decisions are their authority. But they had no right to treat us like CRIMINALS,” he remarked.
If you’re considering a trip to South Korea, here’s essential information you should be aware of.

The Jeju Island Visa Rules

Jeju Island is a special self-governing province in South Korea with distinct entry regulations. Unlike the rest of the country, it offers a specific visa-free program for travelers. You can enter Jeju Island without a visa only if arriving via a direct international flight from outside South Korea and not through any mainland South Korean airport, where a visa would be required.

South Korea Visa Requirements

Indian nationals are required to obtain a visa prior to traveling to the Republic of Korea. However, under certain circumstances, a visa on arrival is allowed for passengers transiting through the Republic of Korea while traveling to or from specific countries.

Valid Passport

A valid passport is necessary for entry into South Korea. Expired, forged, or altered documents will result in entry denial.

Entry Declaration Form

Foreigners entering the Republic of Korea must present themselves before an immigration officer at the port of entry. When passing through inspection, you must show your passport and a Republic of Korea Entry Card (Form 41-2), detailing your purpose of travel and intended stay.

Banned & Restricted Items

Prohibited Items: Meat/dairy products, fresh fruits, soil-bearing plants, poppy seeds, and most CBD oils are strictly forbidden.

Vaping: Liquids with a concentration exceeding 1% (10mg/ml) are not allowed.

Medication & Currency: ADHD medications (such as Adderall) require a special, pre-approved Narcotics Import Permit. Any cash exceeding $10,000 USD must be declared.
