Sources from the Defence Ministry informed ANI that the Acquisition Wing sent the request to the French government last week.
As part of the proposal, 94 of the 114 Rafale jets are anticipated to be produced in India by French aerospace giant Dassault Aviation in collaboration with an Indian partner.
The French government is expected to reply within two to three months, after which negotiations are anticipated to proceed.
This action precedes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to France in mid-June, where discussions on the Rafale programme are likely to take place with French officials.
The proposed acquisition aims to resolve the shortage of fighter squadrons in the Indian Air Force and enhance its combat capabilities through the introduction of additional 4.5-generation Rafale aircraft.
