While addressing the India-Greece Business Forum in Athens, Goyal mentioned that India has finalized the Terms of Reference (ToR) for a proposed trade deal with Mexico and is in advanced discussions with Canada.
He further indicated that India is actively pursuing trade agreements with Chile, the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the MERCOSUR trade bloc.
During his visit, Goyal met with Greece’s Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, manufacturing, industrial partnerships, and resilient supply chains. They also discussed potential collaboration in start-ups and emerging technologies.
Additionally, the minister engaged in talks with Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theoharis about strengthening trade and investment relations, enhancing maritime and connectivity partnerships, and exploring cooperation in new sectors.
Goyal is leading a high-profile Indian business delegation to Greece, where participants are taking part in presentations and start-up pitches at the Athens Startup Business Incubator (THEA) to foster cross-border innovation and investment partnerships.
India’s exports to Greece reached $1.19 billion in 2024, while imports from Greece totaled $170 million. Both nations aim to double bilateral trade by 2030, with an India-European Union free trade agreement anticipated to provide further momentum.
The delegation will also conduct roundtable discussions with industry leaders from both India and Greece at the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, focusing on sectors such as infrastructure, digitalization, defense, food, and agriculture. They will also visit Greek companies to seek partnerships in advanced manufacturing and technology-driven industries.
This update indicates that India is strategically diversifying its trade negotiations in spite of geopolitical challenges, with New Delhi intensifying discussions across North America, Latin America, Africa, and Europe, even as talks with West Asian partners remain stalled.
