"I aspire to play Test cricket, as my father instilled in me that it's the pinnacle of the game": Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Fresh off a record-setting IPL 2026 season, teen batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has stated that his ultimate goal is to don the Indian jersey in Test cricket. In an interview with Star Sports alongside former Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh, the 15-year-old emphasized that although his aggressive play has garnered him success in white-ball formats, he holds Test cricket in the highest regard.

The Rajasthan Royals opener shared that his attacking approach in T20 cricket is a result of the freedom afforded by coaches and management, as well as the nature of the format. Nevertheless, he expressed his willingness to modify his game as necessary.

“Yes, I will need to adapt my game for the next one-day format,” he stated. “I have been practicing diligently with a red ball, though few have witnessed it, but they will soon enough.
“Many believe I aim to hit every ball, but that’s the nature of T20. My coaches allow me to play aggressively, and I do so only because I know I can make the shots, not due to any pressure.”

Sooryavanshi revealed that his next challenge will involve 50-over cricket, where he plans to concentrate on finding gaps and keeping the ball on the ground instead of merely going for boundaries.

The budding star has already made a remarkable impact in the longer white-ball format. Earlier this year, he was instrumental in India’s victorious U19 World Cup run, achieving an impressive 175 off 80 balls in the final and breaking several records in the tournament.

“I aspire to play Test cricket, certainly, because my father instilled in me that it is the pinnacle format, and I have had some experience in it. However, I still have a lot to learn. I have played in the Ranji Trophy but didn’t have many opportunities, which was tough for me. Nevertheless, I will keep honing that part of my game,” he remarked.

His red-ball statistics are modest thus far. From January 2024 to November 2025, Sooryavanshi participated in eight first-class matches, amassing 207 runs at an average of 17.25. Yet, given that many of his games were when he was just 13 and 14 years old, his performances are considered in light of a player developing against seasoned opposition.

After concluding IPL 2026 as the leading run-scorer of the tournament and clinching both the Orange Cap and Most Valuable Player awards, Sooryavanshi’s recent insights provide a glimpse into ambitions that extend far beyond T20 cricket.
