Artificial intelligence is swiftly transforming the pharmaceutical sector by accelerating drug discovery, enhancing clinical trials, optimizing regulatory processes, and bolstering patent protection. While AI can lower costs and shorten development timelines, it is human expertise that remains fundamental to scientific progress.

The pharmaceutical sector has historically grappled with a paradox: though it is one of the most knowledge-driven fields globally, certain essential processes—such as drug discovery, analytical method development, and clinical trial planning—remain notably slow and costly. It can take over a decade and more than a billion dollars for a new molecular entity to progress from laboratory to patient. For Indian pharmaceutical companies, known for their scientific acumen and cost-effectiveness, the challenge now lies not in whether to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), but in how to integrate these technologies in a way that enhances human expertise instead of merely replacing it.
