Formula 1 Confirms No Races in India for 2027 Following Sports Minister's Statement
Formula 1 has informed CNBC-TV18 that a race will not take place in India in 2027, following Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Mansukh Mandaviya’s statement on Monday expressing his desire to bring the event back next year.

Mandaviya clarified that the government is focused on simplifying the taxation issues that prompted the departure of the event after a three-year run in 2013.

“Although India represents a significant market for Formula 1’s continued expansion, supported by a passionate fan base, we will not be racing there in 2027. Organizing and conducting races is a complex process that requires time,” F1 told CNBC-TV18.
During a discussion in New Delhi, Mandaviya mentioned that nearly three companies have shown interest in operating the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida, which hosted three annual F1 races from 2011-2013.

“There will be an F1 race in India in 2027. The first race will take place at the Buddha International Circuit,” Mandaviya stated.

Last December, Formula 1 reported a fan base of about 79 million in India. Mandaviya indicated that the government is committed to making the necessary efforts to bring Formula 1 back to the nation.

“It will take approximately six months to finalize the modalities. The government will assist in obtaining the tax exemptions that have been contentious, making it a viable endeavor for the organizers,” Mandaviya explained.

“Considering the global circumstances due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, India is viewed as a safe and viable location for sporting events, including F1. We anticipate hosting a Moto GP event before F1’s return. The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) is currently in discussions with Formula One, and we aim to facilitate this process,” he elaborated.

This year, the Formula 1 calendar has been reduced to 22 races, as the events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have been canceled due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The initial schedule had included 24 races, raising concerns about fatigue among drivers as a result.

“Not only at BIC, but we also have excellent tracks in Chennai and Hyderabad. The government’s role will be to provide infrastructure and address tax-related matters. For example, if the entertainment tax cannot be fully repealed, we will strive to ensure that reimbursements are made available to incentivize the project for the organizers. Talks on this matter are ongoing. It is an inter-ministerial issue, and we are doing our utmost to make it appealing for Formula One,” Mandaviya added.

According to reports, the cost of hosting a Formula 1 race ranges from $20 to $60 million annually. MotoGP held its last race in India in 2023, but it did not extend beyond the initial event. Additionally, Formula E conducted its first India race in Hyderabad in February of the same year, but it also did not return due to administrative complications.
