This update enhances YouTube’s existing screen-time controls, which previously permitted users to restrict shorts viewing to a minimum time period.
With this latest modification, setting the limit to zero removes shorts content from the feed, replacing it with a notification that indicates the daily limit has been met. This initiative underscores YouTube’s growing commitment to fostering healthier digital habits without completely removing features.
While the feature enhances user control, it does not entirely restrict access for everyone. Once the limit has been reached, users receive a prompt along with an option to override the restriction for the day. This means the tool serves more as a reminder to reduce excessive scrolling rather than as a strict measure.
However, for accounts managed through Google Family Link, the limit cannot be overridden. In these instances, setting the shorts limit to zero completely disables access, providing parents with greater control over screen time.
Users can enable this setting by opening the YouTube app and navigating to the Time Management section within Settings. Although this feature may not fully eliminate the desire to continue scrolling, it offers a practical method for users to manage their viewing habits and regain oversight over their short-form content consumption.
How to enable the feature?
Here’s a step-by-step guide to activate the feature:
Step 1 – Launch the YouTube app on your mobile device or compatible device.
Step 2 – Go to the ‘You’ section found at the bottom right corner.
Step 3 – Access Settings and navigate to the Time Management section.
Step 4 – Click on the ‘Shorts feed limit’ option.
Step 5 – Modify the limit and set it to zero minutes (if the option is available).
After enabling this feature, you will receive a notification whenever you attempt to access Shorts, informing you that your daily limit has been reached.
