Stokes was reinstated on Sunday after investigations by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Cricket Regulator into an incident that occurred at a nightclub on June 8, after England had taken a 1-0 lead in the series at Lord’s.
During his absence, England faced a significant loss at The Oval, led by batsman and former captain Joe Root as the substitute captain.
In a media briefing ahead of the third test, Stokes emphasized his focus on achieving a series victory and downplayed any perceived rift with head coach Brendon McCullum.
“There’s been a lot happening, and there’s no denying that,” Stokes, who succeeded Root as captain in 2022, remarked.
“This has been an event that has understandably drawn attention away from the series. However, I want to ensure my focus is directed where it needs to be.
“Right now, my attention is on the team and the series. We’re currently tied one-all in a three-match series, and this week’s match is crucial for the team despite everything else going on.”
Both Stokes and Atkinson received written warnings regarding their behavior after being found to have violated their contractual obligations, though they were exonerated in relation to a nightclub incident involving a Saracens rugby player.
Much discussion has revolved around Stokes’s relationship with McCullum. The two have been instrumental in establishing England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach since 2022, although results have declined, with England losing six of their last eight tests.
“There’s been a significant misunderstanding regarding my relationship with Brendon,” Stokes stated, dismissing claims of a growing distance between them. “Of course, we maintain a professional dynamic as head coach and captain, but outside of that, we are genuinely good friends.
“We’ve forged a rapport and a relationship, experiencing both challenging and triumphant times together. Do we agree on everything? Certainly not. Do we discuss various matters? Definitely.”
“Differing opinions shouldn’t be interpreted as a divide between Brendon and me.”
Stokes also showed understanding for Root after some of his strategies were criticized during the 253-run defeat in the second test.
“Witnessing him take responsibility last week highlighted his character,” Stokes noted.
“As his friend, it was difficult for me to observe the backlash he received, and that truly affected me.”
