Dharmanagar By-Election: BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti Secures Smooth Victory in Tripura

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election in Tripura, winning by a margin of 18,920 votes against the closest CPI(M) candidate.

Chakraborti garnered 24,291 votes, while his nearest opponent, CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta, received 6,001 votes. The Congress candidate, Chayan Bhattacharya, obtained 5,936 votes.

According to the initial data from the Election Commission of India, BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborti has secured 24,291 votes, indicating a one-sided contest at this point.
Amitabha Datta of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) is in second place with 6,001 votes, followed by Congress’ Chayan Bhattacharya, who has claimed 5,936 votes.

Other candidates are significantly behind, with Bibash Ranjan Das of Amra Bangalee receiving 274 votes, Sanjoy Chaudhury from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) getting 226 votes, and Independent candidate Brajalal Debnath securing 126 votes.

“The people voted for peace and development,” said Chakraborti. “We are confident of winning the byelection by a substantial margin because the BJP has been focused on the state’s development and that of Dharmanagar.”

Chakraborti further stated, “Our aim is to transform Dharmanagar into a developed city to meet the aspirations of the people.”

Vote counting commenced at 8 am under stringent security measures. All EVMs used during the voting were transported securely to the counting center on schedule, where the officials initiated the counting process.

Restrictions were also placed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), prohibiting gatherings within 100 metres of the counting center.

The bypoll took place on April 9 and witnessed a voter turnout of 79.84%. The by-election was necessary due to the passing of the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Biswa Bandhu Sen, in December 2025.

Alongside the announcement of the Assembly election results today, counting is also happening for bypolls in seven constituencies nationwide. These include Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Baramati and Rahuri in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Umreth in Gujarat.
