This will be the CWC’s first meeting after the disappointing results in the Bihar polls.
The meeting holds particular importance as it may shape the party’s strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in the first half of 2026 — covering Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal.
The opposition party is also aiming to intensify its stance against the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005, using it as a central issue against the government.
Commenting on the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that it is not just a rebranding of MGNREGA but rather the “systematic murder of the world’s largest employment scheme.”
Kharge claimed that the government is stripping people of their right to work and emphasized that “there will be a nationwide movement against it.”
The G RAM G Bill, which aims to replace the UPA-era MGNREGA, was approved in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The Opposition has strongly condemned the bill, alleging that the government is dishonoring Mahatma Gandhi and undermining MGNREGA’s provisions.
As outlined in the bill, it will guarantee every rural household a statutory entitlement of 125 days of wage employment annually for adult members who opt to engage in unskilled manual labor.
States must create a scheme in alignment with the new law’s provisions within six months of the VB-G RAM G Act’s commencement.
