United Airlines to transform economy seats into beds with extra mattresses and cozy toys by 2027.
United Airlines is set to enhance long-haul economy travel by transforming standard seats into a bed-like experience. It will be the first airline in North America to provide this kind of seating.

The Chicago-based airline has unveiled a new initiative called ‘Relax Row,’ allowing passengers to reserve three adjacent economy seats equipped with adjustable leg rests. These can be raised or lowered to form a comfortable lie-flat area for relaxing.

“Passengers in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for increased space and comfort, and this is a way we can meet that need,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

The Relax Row consists of a standard set of three economy seats, enhanced with smart adjustments. Each seat features a leg rest that can be elevated to a 90-degree angle. When all three are raised, they convert into a flat, bed-like surface.

In addition to the extra space, passengers will be provided with a mattress pad, blanket, and two pillows. For families traveling with children, United Airlines is including a plush toy and a children’s travel kit.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how this could significantly improve long flights.

“Much needed. United is innovating faster than anyone,” noted one user.

Another user remarked, “Brilliant! You have convinced me for many years, but with this, perhaps I am now even more committed. This is super beneficial, especially on those overnight European routes.”

“I’ve been doing this with extra seats for a long time while traveling with my triplets, so I’m pleased to see this additional adjustable feature being implemented,” added another.

However, some users raised concerns regarding potential pricing, suggesting that reserving three seats might be as costly, if not more so, than a business or first-class ticket.

One user inquired, “While I appreciate the concept, I am quite worried about the expense. Would it be more economical to opt for business or first class?”

Another questioned, “Does this imply that one must purchase tickets equivalent to three economy seats?”

When users asked about bringing pets or the process for booking an entire row, United Airlines indicated that further details are forthcoming.

“Currently, we don’t have information available regarding booking options. When these are launched in 2027, we’ll provide additional details to our customers,” the airline stated.

United Airlines plans to begin rolling out the Relax Row next year on over 200 of its Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft, with up to 12 specially designed rows available on each plane.
