At 60 years old, Rahman has been residing in London since 2008. Earlier this month, he announced his intention to return to Bangladesh.
“I am coming back to our country and I ask for your blessings. On December 25, Insha Allah, with your support and God’s blessings, I will return to Bangladesh,” he stated, according to a Firstpost report. He also requested his supporters not to gather at Heathrow Airport to prevent any disorder that could negatively impact the BNP’s image.

He was sentenced in absentia in connection with the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack, which resulted in the deaths of 24 people at an Awami League rally attended by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
However, after the fall of Hasina’s government in August 2024 due to a student-led uprising, Rahman has been acquitted of all 84 cases against him, including the grenade attack, corruption, and money laundering charges.
