The voting for the 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats occurred in two phases on December 2 and 3.
As reported by the Election Commission, the BJP secured 127 councils, followed by the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena with 54 seats and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) gaining 37, according to News18.
The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance faced a defeat, with Congress capturing 29 local seats and Sharad Pawar-led NCP obtaining eight. The ally Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) managed just six seats.
The local body elections were held after nearly ten years in Maharashtra. Significant issues such as agricultural and farmer-related concerns, alongside delays in welfare payments, were anticipated to benefit the Opposition, but this did not occur, according to News18.
