“We have not made a decision about which three games we want him to play,” Gambhir stated, though it remains uncertain if Bumrah will only feature in three Tests.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned during the squad announcement that Bumrah would not be playing in all matches, based on input from the medical team.
“Replacing someone like Jasprit Bumrah is always challenging, but we have sufficient quality,” Gambhir told reporters during his pre-departure press conference alongside new Test captain Shubman Gill.
“I’ve said it before during the Champions Trophy that this presents an opportunity for others to step up, and we have ample talent. I recognize that he is a top-quality bowler, but our squad is robust,” he added.
Gill reflected Gambhir’s sentiments, stating that the Indian pace attack possesses enough depth to fill Bumrah’s role and secure victories for India in any situation.
“We have selected enough bowlers, and our pace battery is in excellent form to secure Test match victories from any scenario and position,” he remarked.
“Having Jasprit Bumrah is valuable… depending on how many matches he plays, but whenever he returns, it will be a great advantage for us. Nevertheless, we have a solid mix of bowlers capable of getting the job done for the team,” he noted.
Gambhir suggested that Bumrah’s involvement will largely depend on India’s standing at various points throughout the series.
“We want to have a conversation with him, and it will depend on the series. Much will hinge on the series results and the direction it’s taking. I’m fully aware of that, and it’s crucial,” he commented.
