On June 5, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will officially open the last 76-kilometre segment of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. This concluding stretch connects Igatpuri in Nashik with Amane in Thane. Anil Gaikwad, Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), confirmed that the section will be accessible to traffic on that day.

Reduces travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur by half: The recently completed stretch of the expressway, officially named the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, incurred an estimated cost of ₹1,182 crore, as reported by Moneycontrol. This segment includes three significant interchanges at Igatpuri, Kutghar (Shahpur), and Amane. It is jointly financed by the MSRDC and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and features India’s longest road tunnel — a 7.8-km passage through the Kasara Ghat region.

This final segment presents a significant improvement over the previous Mumbai-Nashik route, where drivers had to navigate a steep ascent of 450 meters on winding roads. The Samruddhi Motorway reduces this height to just 160 meters, decreasing travel time between Igatpuri and Amane from 90 minutes to approximately 40 minutes. (Image X)

With all segments of the Samruddhi Motorway now running, the travel duration from Mumbai to Nagpur is set to shrink from 16 hours to just 8 hours. This motorway is the fastest in India. The ₹55,000-crore greenfield initiative spans across 10 districts and 390 villages, allowing speeds of up to 150 km/h. (Image PTI) Here are some key features of the Samruddhi Expressway.

Designed for high speeds: The Mumbai-Nagpur expressway accommodates speeds of up to 150 km/h.

India’s longest tunnel is located on this expressway, spanning 7.8 kilometers at Kasara Ghat, effectively minimizing steep ascents and winding pathways.

Comprehensive infrastructure: The expressway features 65 flyovers, 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, six tunnels, 24 interchanges, and over 300 pedestrian underpasses along its route. (Image CNBCTV18.com file )

Strategic connections: The Samruddhi Expressway links the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai with MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport) in Nagpur. (Image X)

Economic benefits: The route is anticipated to boost trade, tourism, and development throughout central Maharashtra. (Image CNBCTV18.com file)

Samruddhi Expressway as a transformative project: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis envisioned the expressway project, which was initiated in phases. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Nagpur-Shirdi stretch in December 2022, following the opening of the Shirdi-Bharvir and Bharvir-Igatpuri segments in May 2023 and March 2024, respectively. Now that the Samruddhi Expressway is fully operational, it is anticipated to be a transformative force for motorists and the logistics sector. It promises to enhance travel quality—making it smoother, safer, and more efficient—signifying a significant advancement for Maharashtra’s infrastructure. (Image CNBCTV18.com File)
