Rahane is well-versed in local conditions, having significantly contributed to India’s 3-0 series victory in Sri Lanka in 2017, scoring over 200 runs that included a century and a fifty.
“In Sri Lanka, the first day wicket is generally quite good. However, as a batsman, staying ahead of the bowlers is crucial. That’s a lesson I’ve taken away from my experiences in Sri Lanka. You can’t afford to be overly defensive,” Rahane stated in an interview with PTI.
The recently retired player believes that India’s strategy against Sri Lanka’s spin attack will be critical, especially since the hosts are likely to create conditions that favor their bowlers. He emphasized the need for Indian batters to enter the series with well-defined individual plans, rather than letting the circumstances or opponents dictate their tactics.
“You have to be more proactive because the wickets will be spin-friendly, and Sri Lanka has capable spinners in their squad. Moreover, a home team is always challenging to overcome. From my years in cricket, I’ve learned that no opponent should be underestimated. It’s essential to have your game plan as an individual and remain proactive. This will be key, even in Test cricket,” he remarked.
Rahane on the Evolution of Test Cricket
The former India batter shared his thoughts on how the emergence of T20 cricket has impacted player approaches in Test cricket. He noted that modern batters are increasingly utilizing unconventional shots that were seldom seen in the longer format in the past.
“The game has changed significantly. In terms of Test cricket, many T20 players are also participating in Tests now. Shots like the scoop, lap, switch hit, and reverse sweep are being executed consistently. I think that’s a great development,” he explained. “Once a Test match concludes, usually within a week, you’re transitioning to T20 or ODIs, or vice versa. Therefore, adaptability and the right mindset are crucial. In the last few years, the game has advanced immensely,” he added.
Rahane recently concluded his 85-Test career by retiring from international cricket, opening avenues for him to engage in franchise T20 leagues worldwide.
