The first-ever “Travel Happiness Index,” which surveyed over 10,000 travellers from 10 Asia-Pacific nations, revealed that travel is a significant source of joy and well-being for Indians.
“A vast 96% indicate they would prefer to adjust their travel plans rather than cancel when faced with disruptions,” the report states.
“Among those making adjustments, 28% would select an alternative destination, while 19% would delay their trips, and another 19% would alter the timing or duration,” the report notes.
Additionally, the report indicates that an impressive 99% of Indian travellers connect travel with positive emotions, with 90% stating that anticipating a trip boosts their spirits.
Approximately 82% regard travel as vital for their overall happiness and well-being, with happiness (55%), relaxation (46%), and excitement (43%) being the primary feelings linked to travel.
The study also revealed that Indian travellers are increasingly focusing on meaningful experiences rather than crammed itineraries.
About 78% prefer local cuisine and meaningful adventures, while 68% believe family trips are the most enjoyable.
Despite worries regarding extreme weather and health and hygiene risks (33% each), crime (29%), inflation (28%), and political instability (24%), travel remains a significant priority.
Around 70% feel more assured about their ability to afford travel compared to the past.
“Travel is evolving into more than just a break from routine; it is now seen as an investment in well-being, relationships, and personal growth.
“It is especially encouraging to see that rather than pausing their plans in uncertain times, many are opting to adapt and maximize their travel experiences,” stated Santosh Kumar, regional head, South Asia at Booking.com.
This research was commissioned by Booking.com and independently carried out among 10,136 respondents aged 21 and above across 10 Asia-Pacific countries.
The online survey took place in May 2026, including 1,015 respondents from India.
