While addressing Udhayanidhi’s bail application, Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan heard from Advocate General Vijay Narayan, who stated that the state would not pursue the DMK leader’s judicial custody. The government confirmed that Udhayanidhi would be granted station bail after questioning, emphasizing his obligation to cooperate with the ongoing police investigation concerning allegations of innuendos and insults towards a woman’s modesty. The court subsequently closed his bail petition.
As reported by PTI, Udhayanidhi filed an anticipatory bail plea after police visited his Neelankarai residence to question him regarding comments made during a protest on the Cauvery issue in Thanjavur on Monday. He was later arrested and taken to Thanjavur for further questioning.
Earlier on Tuesday, Udhayanidhi was taken into custody due to an alleged “double-meaning” remark concerning actor Trisha, which was claimed to insult her modesty, according to PTI. He was transported in a police van to Thanjavur and charged under several legal provisions, including those related to obscene language and insulting a woman’s modesty.
The arrest prompted protests from DMK workers throughout Tamil Nadu, with party members staging instant strikes and road blockades, as reported by PTI. The agency also noted that DMK president MK Stalin convened a meeting at the party headquarters to strategize the party’s next steps ahead of the Assembly session commencing August 5.
Meanwhile, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) escalated its protests by filing complaints against Udhayanidhi with local police and the National Commission for Women (NCW). PTI reported that S Bairavi, the TVK’s Central District Women’s Wing Organiser for Thanjavur, submitted a complaint alleging that Udhayanidhi made a lewd, double-meaning remark after the crowd repeatedly called out actor Trisha’s name during his speech regarding the Cauvery issue.
