This panel is tasked with suggesting technology-driven reforms for the National Testing Agency (NTA) and enhancing the reliability of competitive examinations, adding another significant project to Nilekani’s portfolio that consistently aligns with nation-building efforts.
Nilekani co-founded Infosys in 1981 alongside NR Narayana Murthy and several other engineers, contributing to the creation of one of India’s premier IT services firms. Serving as Chief Executive Officer from 2002 to 2007, he guided the company during a time of significant growth, positioning Infosys as a global frontrunner in outsourcing and a testament to India’s burgeoning software industry.
His shift from the private sector to public service began in 2009 when the UPA government appointed him as the inaugural Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Tasked with establishing a digital identity system for all residents, Nilekani spearheaded the launch of Aadhaar, which has since evolved into the largest biometric identification initiative worldwide. Currently, Aadhaar is fundamental to various public services, including welfare transfers, banking, and digital verification, forming a vital part of India’s digital infrastructure.
Nilekani has significantly influenced India’s digital payments landscape as well. He has been instrumental in the development of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) through the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which has revolutionized retail transactions and positioned India as a leader in real-time digital payments.
Moreover, his insights have been leveraged across several government initiatives. He chaired the Reserve Bank of India’s Committee on Deepening of Digital Payments in 2019, which set the foundation for enhancing digital payment acceptance nationwide. His involvement with the Technology Advisory Group for Unique Projects (TAGUP) also led to technology-based reforms in tax administration and governance, shaping the digital framework that supports the Goods and Services Tax (GST) ecosystem.
In recent years, Nilekani has persisted in advising the government on innovative technology. He has been linked to the India Energy Stack initiative, aimed at creating digital infrastructure for the power sector, and has promoted the adoption of open digital networks and interoperable platforms across various fields.

Beyond his contributions to public policy, Nilekani holds the position of non-executive chairman at Infosys and actively invests through his venture capital firm, Fundamentum Partnership. Additionally, through the non-profit EkStep Foundation, he supports initiatives centered on foundational literacy, learning, and digital education.
His 2008 publication Imagining India proposed that technology, institutions, and demographic shifts could redefine the future of the nation. Over the past fifteen years, many concepts he advocated have been realized through large-scale digital infrastructure projects.
