The 31-year-old achieved an impressive total of 190kg, lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, finishing a remarkable 22kg ahead of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who earned silver with a total of 168kg.
In doing so, Mirabai broke the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch while also establishing new tournament records for the clean and jerk and total lift.
There was a brief moment of concern when Mirabai missed her opening snatch attempt at 82kg but quickly regained control by successfully lifting 85kg.
She faced another minor setback in the clean and jerk, failing her first attempt at 105kg, but confidently lifted the same weight on her second try. This successful lift set new Commonwealth Games records in the clean and jerk and overall total.
With her victory already assured, Mirabai wisely chose not to attempt her final lift, preserving her energy ahead of the Asian Games in less than two months.
This latest victory solidifies Mirabai’s status among India’s sporting legends. It marked her fourth medal at the Commonwealth Games, having won silver during her debut in Glasgow in 2014, followed by gold medals at Gold Coast 2018, Birmingham 2022, and now Glasgow 2026.
Her success at the Commonwealth Games is just one part of her illustrious international career. Mirabai is India’s only Olympic silver medallist in weightlifting, achieving this at the Tokyo Olympics after overcoming the disappointment of not securing a valid lift at the 2016 Rio Games.
She also became the world champion in 2017, ending India’s 22-year drought for a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships, and has earned multiple medals at the Asian Championships while setting world records in the clean and jerk throughout her career.
Her remarkable consistency has made her the face of Indian weightlifting over the last decade, continuing the legacy of Karnam Malleswari and inspiring a new generation of lifters.
Awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the Padma Shri, and the Arjuna Award, Mirabai has firmly established herself as one of India’s most decorated athletes.
Sunday’s victory serves as yet another testament to her enduring excellence as she prepares to replicate this success at the Asian Games in Japan in a few months.
