Monsoon Travel: Essential Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance
The monsoon season leads to an increase in travel plans, including brief domestic escapes and trips to hill stations or nature spots. While rainfall isn’t always a hindrance to flights or travel arrangements, severe weather can occasionally result in delays, road blockages, medical situations, or itinerary alterations.

Travel insurance can assist travelers in mitigating the financial repercussions of these events, depending on the coverage chosen. However, experts advise that it’s crucial to comprehend policy specifics and exclusions prior to purchasing a plan.

“Travel insurance is particularly important during the monsoon, as weather-related disruptions can disrupt travel plans. Most all-encompassing travel insurance policies cover trip delays, missed connections, cancellations, and extra costs resulting from covered incidents, subject to policy terms and conditions,” stated Rakesh Kaul, Chief Distribution Officer – Retail Business, Bajaj General Insurance, a private general insurance provider.
What does a travel insurance policy cover?

A travel insurance policy may cover trip delays, cancellations, missed connections, baggage issues, and emergency medical expenses accrued while traveling. The level of protection varies based on policy terms, the cause of the disruption, and the documentation submitted during a claim.

For instance, if a flight is delayed due to poor weather, some policies might reimburse eligible expenses like meals, lodging, or transportation after fulfilling certain conditions.

Likewise, trip cancellation benefits can cover certain upfront and non-refundable costs if the cancellation reason falls within the policy’s scope.

“Depending on the coverage and trip type, travel insurance could cover benefits like trip delays, cancellations, missed flight connections, lost or delayed checked baggage, and emergency medical expenses throughout the journey,” said Birendra Mohanty, Chief Business Officer, Zurich Kotak General Insurance, a collaboration between the Swiss Zurich Insurance Group and India’s Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Why domestic travelers should also consider travel insurance

While travel insurance is often linked to international trips, domestic travelers can also benefit from it for unforeseen costs during their trips. Medical emergencies, canceled bookings, baggage problems, or travel delays can lead to extra expenses even within India.

“Domestic travelers can reap the benefits of coverage, especially when facing delays, cancellations, medical emergencies, or baggage-related issues,” Kaul emphasized.

He pointed out that travelers should choose policies based on their destination, trip duration, and planned activities rather than settling for a generic cover without assessing their specific needs.

Features to consider during monsoon travel

Travelers heading to areas prone to heavy rain, landslides, or challenging road conditions might opt for policies that cover trip cancellations, interruptions, emergency assistance, and medical evacuation benefits.

Those visiting locations susceptible to significant rainfall or weather-related interruptions should consider policies that provide comprehensive trip cancellation, interruption, and travel delay coverage.

For individuals traveling to remote areas, emergency assistance services can facilitate alternate travel arrangements, accommodation help, or medical care.

“Emergency Accidental Treatment and Evacuation includes medical care for accidents and emergency medical transport to an appropriate facility, which is vital in affected regions,” said Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO & Head of Direct Sales, Digit General Insurance, a digital-centric, non-life insurance firm in India.

Check exclusions before buying

Travel insurance policies come with particular stipulations, and not every disruption is eligible for a claim. Travelers should assess waiting periods, coverage limitations, exclusions, and necessary documentation prior to purchasing a policy.

“Coverage varies among insurers and between domestic and international travel policies. Travelers should meticulously review the policy language before making a decision,” Mohanty advised.

For example, claims may necessitate documents like airline delay certificates, baggage irregularity reports, or original receipts. Policies may also indicate minimum delay durations before benefits activate.

Chaturvedi urged travelers to verify conditions related to delay notifications, missed connections, and pre-existing issues, as these may influence claim eligibility.
