OpenAI has introduced Codex Micro, a limited-edition desktop keypad tailored for developers utilizing its artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant, Codex, as part of its effort to broaden its hardware ecosystem for AI-driven software development.
Retailing for $230, this device has been created in collaboration with hardware manufacturer Work Louder. It targets developers who work with multiple AI coding agents at once, offering physical controls to activate common functions and oversee agent activities without the need to toggle between application windows.
Physical controls for AI agents
The Codex Micro is equipped with 13 mechanical switches, a rotary encoder, a planar joystick, and a touch sensor. It connects via Bluetooth or USB-C and works with both Mac and Windows systems.
This keypad comes with programmable shortcut keys for tasks such as initiating a new chat, push-to-talk, approving or rejecting AI actions, and launching coding workflows. A dedicated approval button empowers users to authorize an AI agent to execute tasks, while the rotary dial allows adjustments to AI reasoning levels.
Every programmable key features RGB lighting to indicate the status of an AI coding agent. According to OpenAI, indigo represents an idle agent, green denotes an unread chat, blue signifies that an agent is processing, light pink alerts that user approval is needed, and pink indicates an error.

Included in the package is the Codex Icon keyset, which comprises 32 custom keycaps, along with a USB-C cable.
Codex Micro is distinct from the consumer hardware product that OpenAI is anticipated to reveal later. Reports indicate that the company, led by Sam Altman, is working on a ChatGPT-powered smart speaker that may compete with offerings like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomePod, with an announcement expected this year and availability anticipated in 2027.
